A Potty Miracle!

Harper peed in the potty for the first time tonight!

It came as a surprise to everyone, including Harper, who immediately jumped up, pointed at the pee and cried. But then she got a mini Rolo as a treat, the remnants of which can be seen in this gem of a photo.

I asked her to stand next to the potty and smile. She decided to crouch to give a more real-time feel to the moment. She likes to make an impression.

(If you want the whole story, read on! If not, you are now up to date on the most recent Harper Happenings. Congratulations!)

I decided to get Harper used to the idea of toilets, so I pulled the Froggy Potty out of hiding last week. She's afraid to sit on the big toilet, even with the magical tiny-bum seat built into the seat lid, so I thought maybe the Froggy Potty was the way to go.

Harper immediately loved the Froggy! (Called it!) She tried to kiss it and hug it, but we had a nice little talk about never doing that, ever. Not ever. Despite her love for the Froggy, she was terrified to sit on it. Every time she would walk into the bathroom or walk past the door she'd say "hi!" and "bye!" to the Froggy, blow it a kiss and make frog sounds at it, but she wanted nothing to do with sitting on the thing.

Mike and I have been putting her on the toilet for a few seconds before bath time each night for the past week or so to get her more comfortable with it. She generally cries and clings to us for dear life. I told Sky, "Maybe she'll sit on the Froggy if you sit on the big toilet at the same time."

Naturally, Sky put two and two together. If Harper peed in the toilet she would get a treat. If Sky helped to facilitate this miracle, that meant Sky would be getting a treat as well! And thus it became her goal in life to make that happen. It didn't go well. No one got any treats. Much crying ensued.

But tonight! Tonight, Sky sat on the big potty and held Harper's hand. Mike held her other hand and Harper actually sat on the Froggy. I came in to congratulate her on her bravery and hold her hand. Then all of a sudden she peed in the potty! It completely freaked her out. She jumped up and pointed at the pee and cried. Then I ran to get her a mini Rolo (and yes, one for Sky, who hadn't stopped talking about potty treats for even a second since the moment Harper sat on the Froggy). I also grabbed the camera so I could snap that lovely shot above.

An hour before the First Pee of 2012, we all snuggled around the fireplace to enjoy our first ever cozy fire in our new house. And with fire, all possibilities are made new!

(I just made that up. It sounded Biblical, and Biblical-sounding phrases go perfectly with miracles, don't you think?)

Halloween 2012!

Halloween was excellent this year.

Harp was a garden gnome and Sky was a fairy. Gnomes are very difficult to photograph, but it helps to have a fairy on-hand to keep the gnomes under control.

Mike was a Hogwarts student of the Gryffindor variety. Behold his wand skills. Expelliarmus!

I was Tween Hobo. Notice my kick-A bindle.

Not just a hobo, Tween Hobo. See:

Tween Hobo retweeted my picture several times. I'm pretty sure I won the costume contest, but there was no prize because she is a tween hobo. Her worldly belongings are in a bindle. She doesn't have prizes.

Here's the whole family!

Grandma and Grandpa came over for a Halloween visit! They passed out candy while we took the girls trick-or-treating, then we switched and let them take the girls out for a bit. We love having them on Halloween!

I spend the night before Halloween helping the girls carve their pumpkins, so I didn't get around to carving my own. I grabbed a drill and "carved" my pumpkin as we were leaving to trick-or-treat. A 10-year-old kid told me, "I like your industrial pumpkin." Thank you, kid. That is how hobos carve pumpkins.

Cute little trick-or-treaters!
Harper's pumpkin has the cat, Sky's has the butterflies. They wouldn't stand next to them because Sky didn't want to catch fire.

Trick or Treat!

Sky and Harp had a blast! I told Sky, "Do you know how to tell if a house has candy?" She asked how, so I told her, "Look for houses with their lights on. Lights on means candy!" So Sky spent the entire night yelling, "Lights up!" as soon as she saw the next house with lights on. "Lights up!" We have a video on Mike's phone, but Mike's phone is with Mike and Mike is at work.

Harp with her candy. She was too busy eating as much as she could to smile for the camera:

Sky with her candy!

We love Halloween. Can't wait for next year!

Halloween at Miss Libby's

Have I mentioned how much Sky loves preschool? Well, she loves it. Big time. Huge time. And for good reason: Miss Libby's is awesome! We all love it!

For Halloween, the kids put on a little show for the parents with some cute Halloween songs. Here are all of the cute kids, making whatever faces they make when the cameras come out:

Crew, Elle, Sky and Preston

Sky opted to wear last year's Halloween costume, because "Well, it's beautiful. Also, I really REALLY want to be a fairy princess again!"

Crew was the cutest Spiderman ever!

All the kids singing a ghost song. Crew insisted on Leisa joining in. HA!

All the kids and Miss Libby, the cowgirl!

Sky, Crew and Harp. Harper was SO happy to be invited into preschool for 20 minutes!

Piggies!

Today is a big day. Harper wore her hair in tiny pigtails for the first time!

She also developed the enviable ability to eat green beans, mangos and quesadillas with her toes.

It's a big, big, big day!

To the Mall!

I took Sky to the mall tonight to get some tap shoes for her dance class. This was her first ever trip to the mall.

That's insane. She is 4! (Heather, I know you're appalled right now.) We've been to outdoor malls before, and possibly stopped inside a Sears once when she was tiny, but this was her first real time visiting the mall and she was wonderstruck. We rode the escalators, got a cookie at Mrs. Fields and explored Build-A-Bear and LUSH (I needed a new Buffy Bar). I love seeing her get so excited about something so simple as a trip to the mall!

Look at that happy kid, in her favorite rain coat with chocolate chip on her lips!

I love Sky. She is such a great girl! I also love that we finally got her a pair of tap shoes that actually fit her ever-growing feet. Hopefully she'll perform at the Christmas show so we can see those taps in action!

October Skysisms

10.3
Sky: "I'm such a good artist."
Me: "You are."
Sky: "Maybe I should be a mommy AND an artist when I grow up!"
Me: "Oh! That would be great!"
Sky: "Because I'm so good at making paintings and I'm soooo good at pretending to be a mommy!"
Me: "You really are."
Sky: "Mom, did you know I always dreamed of being an artist?"
Me: "You did? What else do you dream of?"
Sky: "Pretty things. Like...castles and carriages."
Me: "Carriages!"
Sky: "Purple."
Me: "You love purple."
Sky: "Yeah, the yellow one was so silly it looked like a grandpa."
Me: "Hmm..."

10.5
Sky, all day long: "I'M FOUR YEARS OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Sky, after her birthday party: "Mom, I got EVERYTHING I ALWAYS WANTED for my birthday!"
Me: "You did?!"
Sky: "I got a REAL BIKE, and a PAINT SET! And a CUMBOODULL! And PONIES and LITTLEST PET SHOPS! Aaaaaaand, I also got balloons!"
Me: "What a great birthday!"
Sky: "This is the best birthday EVER!"

10.11
Sky: "What did you girls do today?"
Me: "We went to Costco while you were at preschool, then we came home and built towers until it was time to pick you up!"
Sky: "I made a necklace out of macaroni."
Me: "Yes, you did!"
Sky: "But the noodles we used for the necklace weren't cooked."
Me: "That's good. That would be weird."
Sky: "And upsetting."
Me: "You're an old soul."
Sky: "What does an old soul even do?"
Me: "It means you speak like you are much older."

10.16
Me: "Sky, we have a new little container for leftover food. We can put our food scraps in it, then the garbage man takes the scraps and turns them into special dirt."
Sky: "Oh, hahaha. You mean a compost bin! Hahahaheeheehee!"
Me: "...Yes, that is what I mean. How do you know that?!"
Sky: "I learned it from Noonbory, Mom."
Me: "Oh."
Sky: "It's called a compost bin, Mom. You didn't know that, but now you do because I told you."
Me: "I know what a compost bin is, babe."
Sky: "Well now you do. I like compost bins. We're being nice to the plants by making plant food. It's sooo nice!"

10.22
"Wouldn't it be fun if we lived on a blimp?"

10.22
Me: "That's freakin' awesome! Oops. I mean, that's awesome. Because we're not saying freakin' right Sky?"
Sky: "Frickin' right! We are NOT saying freakin'."
